In September, 85,167 new passenger cars and SUVs were registered in Spain, a 16.4% increase compared to September 2024 and 4.2% more than in the same month of 2019, according to Ideauto data for the Spanish Association of Automobile and Truck Manufacturers (ANFAC).

Furthermore, September was the first month since the COVID-19 pandemic in which total sales surpassed the figures for the same month in 2019 (81,746 units that year) by 4.2%. This was described as an “excellent figure” by the associations of manufacturers (ANFAC), distributors (Ganvam), and dealers (Faconauto).

Total sales in the accumulated year-to-date already reached 854,658 units, representing a year-on-year increase of 14.8%. This keeps the sector hopeful of closing 2025 with over 1.1 million passenger car sales. However, when compared to the 2019 figures, the accumulated total through September is 11.5% lower than that of the last pre-pandemic year.

The strong pace of sales of electrified cars (pure electric and plug-in hybrids) is driving the total market, according to sector associations. In September, 20,479 electrified cars were registered, marking a 97% increase compared to the same month last year and claiming a market share of 24.1%.

For the accumulated year-to-date, they total 158,744 units sold, representing 98% growth compared to the same period the previous year. The total market share for electric and plug-in hybrids reached 18.6%, eight percentage points higher than in 2024.

Non-plug-in hybrid cars (HEV and MHEV) were the preferred choice for Spanish customers in September, with 35,295 registrations and a market share of 41.4%.

Sales of pure petrol (gasoline) cars fell by 14.5% to 20,084 units, representing a market share of 23.6%, while diesel cars plummeted by 30.4% and held a minimal share of 5.3% with barely 4,491 registrations.
