Box from Spain, a taste of real Spanish entrepreneurism

Box from Spain

Would you fancy having today a Spanish home made-like meal on your table? Esther and Mario Garcia will hand it to you in a simple box from anywhere in Europe–you’d need Internet access to order, though.

That is the purpose behind Box from Spain, an online retail startup that offers neatly illustrated boxes with a combination of five quality ingredients of the Spanish cuisine ranging from chorizo and ham to oil, so Spaniards living abroad and those longing for a reminder of their tasty holidays in Spain can feed themselves properly.

“The idea came from our own experience,” said to valenciaplaza.com Esther, who has already lived in Dublin, Edinburgh and in several other places in Latin America. She’s travelled extensively either due to professional commitments or to her studies of publicity and marketing. It was after getting to know more on the ground about company management that Esther decided to go ahead.

What began as a project draft on a piece of paper became a reality when the Garcias set a private limited company, put some of their own capital into it and then added a loan given by the state bank ICO

The operation, now in an early stage, is basically online although some distribution shops in countries like the UK have showed interest. Some Spanish hotels, pubs and restaurants abroad would like to be counted in, too. Esther said that “despite the difficult economic environment, we are breaking the ice.”

Particularly complex is finding the best way to send refrigerated packages, which would open the door to using products like cheese, although at the moment food doesn’t need to be processed to reach clients within the EU, Norway and Switzerland.

Box from Spain has already won praise and an award by the organisation of young entrepreneurs in the region of Valencia.
