Germany, the Same Ol’ Song

MADRID | By Luis Martí | In Germany, coalitions are frequent at all levels of government, with a degree of formalization and publicity which was minimum before (in the Adenauer Era), but which has shown an extensive “coalition contract” since 1969. The current contract, initialled on 27 November, has yet to be ratified –and it’s expected that the process will be brief where the CDU and the CSU are concerned, but not so much in the case of the SPD, which must be subject to a vote of approval by its affiliates.

BERLIN | By Presseurop| The contract for a new grand coalition government between Angela Merkel’s Christian democrats and the Social Democratic Party, which was presented on November 27, has not met with much enthusiasm in the German press. No matter whether this is truth or not- the message has passed.

PARIS | By Thibaut Madelin at Les Echos via Presseurop | Among the – rare – unknowns of the September 22 elections is the eventual tally for the Alternative für Deutschland. Germany’s Role in Europe: A Sleeping Beauty

HAMBURG | Via Presseurop |The Merkel government demands southern countries make far-reaching reforms, but denies responsibility for the consequences of the crisis. It is a harmful attitude for Europe as Germany prepares for its legislative elections, warns philosopher Jürgen Habermas. As he puts it, “Germany is not dancing on the volcano; it is asleep on it.”

The German pessimism about Spain and Angela Merkel’s tips

MADRID | By Luis Alcaide via Capitalmadrid | A German economist recently questioned the role of Spanish exports to balance the country’s deficit, ignoring statistical facts. His pessimistic attitude shows an exaggerated interpretation of austerity. Meanwhile Angela Merkel is calling for patience and avoiding political responsibility in the construction of a fiscal and economic union.
