The European Commission has imposed a record fine of €550 million (around $629 million) on AliExpress, the retail platform owned by the Alibaba Group, for breaching the EU’s content moderation regulations (Digital Services Act), by failing to adequately assess the sale of illegal or counterfeit products on its platform. It is the largest fine imposed to date under this regulatory framework. The case directly affects the global e-commerce sector and reinforces Brussels’ stance on the supervision of large digital platforms.

Brussels has clarified that the amount of the fine was calculated taking into account the turnover of the parent company Alibaba, as well as the seriousness of the infringements and their duration (which lasted until at least June 2025).

AliExpress has until 20 October 2026 to submit an action plan to the Commission to remedy its failure to fulfil its obligations to assess and mitigate systemic risks, although the Chinese e-commerce platform has announced that it plans to appeal the decision, considering it disproportionate.
