The President of the United States, Donald Trump, has announced that he has reached an agreement with his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, to begin “negotiations immediately” with the aim of ending the war in Ukraine.

In the hours following the announcement, members of the Trump Administration have outlined some of the conditions for this agreement, which would involve overlooking Ukraine’s claims on Crimea, and even on the Russian-speaking territories already occupied by Russia (Donbas) and its aspiration to join NATO.

Trump communicated the news through his social media platform Truth Social, where he detailed that the agreement with Putin was achieved after a “long and very productive phone call.” According to the U.S. president, both leaders expressed their willingness to “stop the millions of deaths occurring in the war between Russia and Ukraine.”

“President Putin mentioned the need to address the root causes of the conflict and agreed with Trump that a long-term solution can be found through peace talks,” said Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov. “We also agreed that our respective teams will start negotiations immediately, and we will begin by calling President Zelensky of Ukraine to inform him about the conversation, something I will do right now,” Trump commented.

Subsequently, the Ukrainian president confirmed having had a phone call. “The conversation [with Zelensky] went very well. He, like President Putin, wants to achieve peace. We talked about various issues related to the war, but mainly about the meeting being organized for Friday in Munich, where Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio will lead the delegation. I hope that the results of that meeting will be positive,” Trump stated in a message on his social media platform, Truth Social.
