CdM | Iberdrola (IBE) has been recognised by the multinational pharmaceutical company Bayer for promoting industrial electrification through innovative solutions, a key aspect in meeting European decarbonisation targets.

The German company presents the Bayer Procurement Decarbonisation Accelerator Award to key partners who contribute to the sustainability, efficiency and reduction of emissions in their operations and processes through clean technologies and renewable energies.

In the case of Iberdrola, Bayer has valued the various agreements and solutions aimed at the electrification and decarbonisation of its processes. These include the long-term power purchase agreement (PPA) signed by both parties, which marked a milestone in the pharmaceutical sector in Spain. Thanks to this contract, Iberdrola supplies renewable electricity from the Francisco Pizarro photovoltaic plant (Cáceres) to nine Bayer centres.

Both companies also have similar contracts in other countries, such as Italy, where the energy comes from the Montefiascone plant.

In addition, this year they have strengthened their strategic collaboration with another pioneering initiative: the first heat supply project (Heat Purchase Agreement) in Spain, through which Iberdrola will electrify Bayer’s plant in La Felguera (Asturias), where all the acetylsalicylic acid used to manufacture aspirin is produced. The project involves transforming the renewable energy supplied into steam using a molten salt thermal storage system, which will reduce CO2 emissions by 8,000 tonnes per year.
