CdM | CAF (CAF), at the head of an international consortium, has been awarded the comprehensive project for the new Line 10 of the Naples Metro, corresponding to Lot 2, which includes the design and implementation of the automatic metro system. The contract has been awarded by E.A.V. S.r.l. (Ente Autonomo Volturno), the transport operator for the Italian region of Campania.

The total value of the contract, including all options, could exceed €630 million, while the initial phase awarded amounts to €259 million, according to information released by the company on Tuesday. In addition to CAF, the consortium includes the companies AET Ltd., Francesco Ventura Costruzioni Ferroviarie Ltd., Mer Mec STE Ltd. and Leonardo Ltd.

The scope of Lot 2 includes the CBTC/ATO GoA4 signalling system, electrical substations, catenary, data and telecommunications networks, platform doors and the Operational Control Centre. It also includes the supply of a new fleet of 100% automatic trains, workshop equipment for the new depots and their comprehensive maintenance. The units, based on CAF’s INNEO platform, will consist of three high-capacity cars and will feature a modern and innovative interior and exterior design.

This contract is a strategic milestone for CAF, as it is its first reference in the field of automatic metro driving, reinforcing its commitment to the railway signalling business. CAF’s system, called OPTIO, will enable operation in GoA4 mode, the highest level of railway automation, in which the train operates completely autonomously, without a driver or on-board personnel, managing both traffic and stops, door opening and depot operations.

The new infrastructure, known as the Afragola–Napoli LAN Line (Line 10), will be approximately 12 kilometres long and will become a key hub for urban mobility in Naples. The project is part of the Urban Sustainable Mobility Plan and aims to connect the Afragola high-speed station with the city’s metropolitan network, improving its integration with the national railway network.

The award reinforces CAF’s historic presence in Italy, a market in which it has been operating since 2000. Since then, the company has supplied more than 70 metro units for lines A, B and Roma-Lido in the Italian capital, as well as trains for Sardinia, Trieste and Bari, and trams for cities such as Rome, Palermo and Bologna. In the urban bus sector, the group maintains a leading position with more than 2,000 Solaris vehicles in service, many of them zero-emission, in various Italian cities.

With this new contract in Naples, CAF takes another step forward in its strategy to consolidate its position as a global provider of comprehensive mobility solutions, in line with the objectives of its 2026 Strategic Plan.
