Bolsas y Mercados’ equity trading up in April, but drop in corporate debt volume

MADRID | Bolsas y Mercados Españoles BME, the operator of all stock markets and financial systems in Spain, said Thursday that equity trading volume on the Spanish stock exchange in April had reached €65.75 billion. This is an increase of 7.25% from the previous month but 19% down on the same period in 2011. The trading volume for the first four months totaled €242.70 billion, down 26% from the same period in 2011.

The number of trades in April came in at 4.6 million, up 15% from March 2012 and 31% higher than a year earlier. The number of trades to the end of April totaled 15.86 million, down 3.5% from the same period last year.

As for the ETF segment, the trading volume to April came in at €602 million, down 51% from the same period last year. In April the trading volume came in at €148 million, up 20% from the previous month and 8% down from April last year. The number of trades in ETFs to April totaled 14,102, down 14% from the same period in 2011. The number of trades in April reached 5,047, a 34.5% increase from the previous month and 98% higher than in April 2011.

In April trading on BME’s derivatives market came in at 4.25 million contracts, up 16.7% from the same period last year. There was a pick up in trading in products linked to indices. Trading in index futures increased by 39.8% year on year, at 831,252 contracts, while trading in options on Indices grew by 109% to 281,888 contracts.

Trading in options on stocks reached 1.66 million contracts in April up 23% from April 2011, while the volume of warrants and certificates admitted to trading in 2012 totaled 2,450, up 13% from the same period last year.

Trading on the warrants and certificates market to April reached €302 million, down 46% from the same period in 2011. The trading volume on this market in April came in at €52 million, down 34% from the previous month and 47% lower than in the same period in 2011.

The number of trades to the end of April in this market totaled 76,431, down 27% year on year. The number of trades in April reached 16,412, down 20% from the previous month and 8.5% lower than in April 2011.

In April trading on BME’s Corporate Debt market reached €79.65 billion, down 76.8% from the same period last year although the number of trades was 180,490, more than three times higher than that for April 2011 (+262.8%).

New issues in April reached €19.07 billion, down 28.7% from April 2011. New issues for the first four months of the year totaled 146,473, up 50% year on year. The outstanding balance at the end of April, at €894.06 billion, was up 4.1% year on year.
