Can Spain Create 800,000 Jobs In Three Years?

Gemma Garcia Brosa via The Conversation | On October 7, Spanish PM Pedro Sanchez presented the government’s Plan for Recovery, Transformation and Resilience to access the resources of the European programme Next Generation EU and stated that 800,000 jobs will be created. The Spanish economy is undoubtedly capable of generating that number of jobs within three years. In fact, on average, more than 400,000 jobs have been created in Spain each year in 2014-2019. But does this target seem realistic now?

Spain jobless rate soars to 16.26%, despite adding 569,600 jobs in Q3, according to the EPA

The number of employed people increased in the third quarter of the year by 569,600 compared to the previous quarter which saw the greatest impact of the pandemic from confinement. The total number of employed stood at 19.17 million. However, the number of unemployed also increased by 355,000 to 3.722.900, equivalent to a rate of 16.26%, the highest since the first quarter of 2018, according to the Labour Force Survey (EPA) published on Tuesday.

Spain’s Jobless People Cut By 26,329 In September, Record Drop Since 1996; Rate Doubles The Eurozone’s

The labor market in Spain added 84,013 affiliates in September, the largest increase for this month in the series, while the jobless people fell by 26,329, also an historic high for the ninth month of the year, reported the Ministry of Labor today. With this figures the total number of unemployed reached 3,776,485 by the end of September. Even so, Spain leads European unemployment in August, with a rate of 16.2%, which is double than that of the Eurozone (8.1%), according to data published yesterday by Eurostat.

Spanish Unemployment Drops For The First Time Since February: 89,849 People Find A Job In July

The labour market figures in July are very good thanks to the reopening of services and the return of tourism to Spain. Unemployment fell by 89,849 people, the first drop since February.The number of people still affected by temporary layoffs schemes (ERTEs) is now just over one million and the Social Security affiliation average membership is still rising. However, only 17% of the jobs destroyed have been recovered.

The results of the Labour Force Survey (EPA in its Spanish acronym) for the second quarter of 2020 continue to reflect the situation arising from the pandemic. Employment fell by 1,074,000 persons in this period. It should be borne in mind that this figure does not include those affected by a temporary lay-offs with suspension of employment. Meanwhile, the unemployment figure rose by by 55,000 people, with the unemployment rate standing at 15.33%.

Temporary Layoffs Gradually Lifted In Spain: 1.56 M Workers Have Taken Up Their jobs, 1.8 M Still On Hold

The recovery in employment in Spain is proving to be a struggle at best, and a mirage at worst. The data shows that the trend in unemployment growth is slowing: unemployed in June rose by 5,100 people compared to 26,573 the previous month, 282,891 in April and 302,265 people in March. However, this month of June was the worst since 2008. The figure continues to exclude workers who are suspended from work or whose hours have been reduced as a result of a temporary layoff scheme.

Spain Unemployment Continued To Rise In May ; But The Figure Is Ten Times Lower Than In Last Two Months

The number of unemployed in Spain increased by 26,573 people in May, compared to 282,900 the previous month and -84,075 in May 2019. This is the worst May figure in recent years, but it is a vast improvement on previous months (up 282,000 in April and up 302,265 in March).This may be enough to raise some optimism in the Spanish labour market. The labour market data for May also reflects an increase of 97,462 people registered with Social Security compared to the previous month.

Over 40% of Spanish Firms Plan To Cut Their Workforce Due To Covid-19

More than 40% of Spanish companies are planning or considering cutting their workforce due to the impact of Covid-19. At the same time, 25% of firms have frozen salaries and 16% are reducing them, according to a survey of nearly 1,000 European organisations, carried out by consultancy group Willis Towers Watson. More than one hundred Spanish companies are included in the survey.

Spain Loses Almost 950,000 Jobs Since The Beginning Of The Coronavirus Confinement

The Social Security has lost 947,896 affiliates since the beginning of the COVID-19 crisis and up to end-April, leaving the total number of contributors at 18.39 million. Meanwhile unemployment grew in these last two months by more than 585,000 people, exceeding 3.8 million unemployed. The Ministry of Labour has not included the almost 3.5 million Spaniards protected by a situation of total or partial suspension from work via temporary layoffs.
