Spending on contributory pensions in Spain rises 6% in October to €13.6758 billion

CdM | Contributory pensions (retirement, widowhood, permanent disability, orphanhood and family benefits) rose by 6% in October to €13.6758 billion, according to data released by the Ministry of Inclusion, Social Security and Migration.

In the eighth month of the year, Social Security paid a total of 10,397,372 pensions to 9,405,352 million people.

Almost three-quarters of these were retirement pensions, representing more than 73% of the total (€9,999.2 million, up 6.01%). €2,199.5 million (up 4.09%) was allocated to widow’s pensions, while the payroll for permanent disability benefits amounted to €1,262.8 million (up 10.26%), orphan benefits to €177.7 million (up 3.92%) and benefits for family members to €36.6 million (up 6.29%).

The average pension in the system is €1,315.3 per month, representing an increase of 4.4% over the same month last year. Specifically, the average retirement pension, received by nearly 6.6 million people, stands at €1,510.1 per month, 4.3% higher than a year ago. Meanwhile, the average widow’s pension is €936.7 per month.

By scheme, the average retirement pension from the General Scheme is €1,668.7 per month, while in the Special Scheme for Self-Employed Workers it is €1,011.6 per month. In coal mining, the average pension amounts to €2,909, and €1,672.8 in the Special Scheme for Sea Workers.

For new retirement registrations, the average amount in the system is €1,675.6, according to the latest data available for September. In the General Scheme, the average pension for new retirees is €1,780.8 per month.

As for new retirees, at the end of September, the latest data available, there were 274,843. Deferred retirements now account for 11.2% of the total number of new retirees. Overall, 73.1% of registrations occur at the normal retirement age or later, ‘thanks in large part to incentives to bring the age of access closer to the legal retirement age,’ according to the Ministry.
