Don’t trade the trade war

Yves Bonzon (Julius Baer) | It is my long-held view that political noise is an exogenous factor that is hard to time. As long as we can remain sufficiently confident that the external shock is not triggering a systemic crisis or a recession, we must stay focused on the fundamentals and resist the temptations of exploiting the irrationality of a whipsawing market. And I still see a wealth of factors favouring a long-term uptrend of equities in a low-growth and low-inflation world.

We remain short-term Neutral on the pound given a delay and long-term Bullish, as the only way to Brexit is through a deal.

Why is the European motor losing energy?

Caixabank Research | Having grown at an acceptable 2,8% in 2017, Germany slowed sharply in 2018 and, in the last four quarters, interannual growth has on average been a miserable 0.8%. In the second quarter, in fact, growth was negative, and everything point to this tendency being maintained in the third quarter, which would mean entering a technical recession. Below we analyse why.

Spain’s Supreme Court condemns Catalan separatist leaders to 9-12 years

The Catalan process has been one of the major causes of friction in contemporary Spanish history. After two years of judicial process, Spain´s Supreme Court has considered proven that during Autumn of 2017 there were “undoubted episodes of violence” in Catalonia, but does not think these sufficient to condemn the separatist leaders for rebellion, as sought by the Public Prosecutor.
