CdM | Retail sales fell by 0.1% in March in both the Eurozone and the European Union (EU) as a whole compared to the previous month, according to data published by Eurostat, the EU statistics office. In year-on-year terms, the volume rose by 1.5% in the Eurozone and 1.4% in the EU.
In detail, compared to the previous month, the volume of retail trade in the eurozone fell by 0.1% for food, beverages and tobacco and by 0.1% for non-food products (excluding motor fuel). The price of motor fuel in specialised stores rose by 0.4%.
By country, the largest monthly decreases were recorded in Slovenia (-2%), Estonia (-1.3%) and Slovakia (-0.9%). In contrast, the largest increases were observed in Malta (2%), Belgium and Croatia (both 1.4%) and Bulgaria (1.1%).
In the EU, it fell by 0.4% in food, beverages and tobacco and rose by 0.1% for non-food products (excluding car fuel). Fuel rose by 0.4%.
Meanwhile, in year-on-year terms, in the euro area, retail sales rose by 0.6% for food, beverages and tobacco and by 2.3% for non-food products (excluding car fuel). The price of automotive fuel in specialised stores rose by 0.9%.
In the EU, volume rose by 0.1% for food, beverages and tobacco and by 2.7% for non-food products (excluding car fuel). The price of automotive fuel in specialised stores rose by 1.7%.
Among the Member States with available data, the highest annual increases were in Luxembourg (9.4%), Bulgaria (5.4%) and Cyprus (5%). By contrast, the largest decreases were in Slovakia (-2.9%), Poland (-1.8%) and Italy (-1.4%).
