EU prioritises diplomacy with US, but ready to retaliate with ‘firm’ plan

US against Europe

BancaMarch | Ursula Von der Leyen affirmed that the community as a whole has the power to fight back, with all possible tools on the table. The President of the Commission assured that the bloc is prepared to restrict imports of services of US origin if Trump today makes good on his threat to impose reciprocal tariffs.

The EU has the capacity to control trade in services, due to its deficit of 0.8% in the balance of services with the US. Specifically, the negative balance is mainly due to the charge for the use of intellectual property (€128.541 billion in 2023). To date, the EU has only announced retaliation, delayed until the middle of this month, on imports of goods worth €26 billion.
