According to Bloomberg, Iran has announced an agreement with Oman on a proposed route through the Strait of Hormuz which could reopen the sea passage to shipping.
Media sources indicate that under the 60-day agreement ships would enter via the Iranian side and exit off the coast of Oman in coordination with Iran. The agreement would provide for the United States and Iran to resume negotiations on the Asian country’s nuclear programme and the easing of sanctions. Iran and Oman will continue to negotiate a permanent agreement regarding the Strait of Hormuz.
However, the issue of tolls remains under discussion. Whilst it was reported in the press that no tolls would be payable during the 60-day agreement period, there have been talks about Iran collecting ‘voluntary’ payments to cover maritime services. Iranian sources told Reuters that Iran wants a toll of 5–7 per cent of a ship’s cargo, Oman is proposing a 3 per cent toll on cargo, and the United States insists there should be no tolls.
