Spanish Banks Will Present Results Amidst Concerns Of Potential Bank Tax

Spain was a well-liked region within European banks until the new government came into place. As Morgan Stanley points in a note to investors, “the negative noise around a potential bank tax and the doubts on the fiscal plans have hit the sector.” Santander will kick off the 2Q18 results season on July 25th with all the eyes on its capital position and headwinds from Latam currencies. Issues like Turkey in BBVA and TSB in Sabadell have provided more downside to some of these names.

Telefonica Q1’18 net up 7.4%; revenues hit by currency pressures

Telefonica posted a 7.4% rise in net profit in the first quarter of 2018 to 837 million euros from a year earlier. The figure beat FactSet’s analysts consensus for net profit of 800 million euros. But revenues fell 7.2% to 12.19 billion euros, as currency pressures offset improvements in the group’s home market.

Telefonica’s  net profit rose 42.2% to 779 million euros in the first quarter of 2017 from a year earlier. The 2016 results were reformulated mid-last year after the group decided to stop presenting its UK subsidiary O2 as a discontinued operation. Revenues from its Brazil and Latin American operations were the main earnings driver.
