“We need to approach negotiations with the U.S. on terms that are completely different from those currently being proposed”

Says Antonio Bonet, president of the Club of Spanish Exporters and Investors. He points out that “Europe has a single tariff applied by all member states, but the U.S. applies a tariff to each country, meaning it can decide that the tariff applied to Spanish black olives is higher than that for Italian olives, as it did at one point. So there is a part of the negotiation between Europe…

Trump’s 200% tariff on wine and cava threatens €334 million in Spanish exports

Spanish wine, like European wine, is trembling. Donald Trump has decided to include it in the trade war that the United States is waging with the world and has threatened to impose a 200% tariff on them. This effectively means expelling Spanish wines from the U.S. market, a wine war that would particularly affect Catalan cavas and the wineries of Rioja and Ribera del Duero. This is indicated by the…

US tariffs on aluminium and steel to come into force this Wednesday

BancaMarch | On Wednesday, tariffs on aluminium and steel will come into force, with Canada, Brazil, the EU and Mexico being the most affected regions. Trump initiates procedure for possible imposition of tariffs on copper

Banca March | On Wednesday, the US president signed an order instructing the Department of Commerce to carry out an investigation under Section 232. Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick said the action will also look at products containing copper and stressed…

This time, a 25% tariff on all imports of steel and aluminum from that country. Spain is the tenth largest exporter of steel to the US, with sales to that country amounting to 290,000 tons in the last 11 months and one week, according…

Trump uses fentanyl threat to justify raising tariffs 10% on products from China, and 25% on those from Mexico and Canada

Banca March: Trump has offered new clues on tariffs: he promises to increase them by 10% on all goods imported from China, and by 25% on products from Mexico and Canada. The main rationale for the tariff hike centres on combating the threat posed by fentanyl. In the case of China, the future president accused the country of not taking sufficient measures to stop the flow of illicit drugs crossing…

“We do not see data pointing to a recession, for now”

Esty Dwek (Natixis) | Ongoing weakness across manufacturing and trade shouldn’t be a surprise, but service sectors continue to hold up, even showing a small rebound in June. Overall, we expect slower but stable growth around trend levels for the major economies.

A G20 meeting marred by trade restrictions

The G20 finance and economy ministers will meet in Fukuoka (Japan) this weekend against the backdrop of trade restrictions. The World Trade Organization estimates that between October and May, 20 new restrictions on world trade have been introduced, worth 335.9 mm. $. These measures are linked to others that previously affected a volume of trade worth 480.9 mm. $, and most worrying is that more restrictions are expected. This compensates, Intermoney analysts argue, the liberalizing measures by value of 397.2 mm. € that were taken in the last months.
