Social Security pension spending in Spain rises 6% to €14.336 billion in April

CdM | The Social Security system allocated €14,336.2 million to pension payments in April, representing a 6% increase on the same month last year, according to the Ministry of Inclusion, Social Security and Migration.

In total, 10,476,332 pensions were paid to around 9.5 million people in the fourth month of 2026. Of these, 6.7 million were retirement pensions, 2.3 million were widow’s pensions, 1.1 million were permanent disability pensions, 336,141 were orphan’s pensions and 46,768 were paid to relatives.

Of the monthly Social Security contributory pension bill (€14,336.2 million), three-quarters correspond to retirement pensions. Specifically, these pensions account for 73.2% of the total, amounting to €10,499.2 million.

In addition, €2,281.9 million has been allocated to widow’s pensions, whilst the total for permanent disability benefits amounts to €1,331.6 million, that for orphan’s pensions to €185 million and that for benefits for dependants to €38.4 million.

The average retirement pension is €1,569. The average pension under the Social Security system is €1,368.4 this month, 4.5% higher than in the same month last year. This average includes the amounts of the various types of pension (retirement, permanent disability, widow’s, orphan’s and benefits for dependants). The average retirement pension stands at €1,569.70 per month, an increase of 4.4%.

By scheme, the average retirement pension under the General Scheme is €1,729.60 per month, whilst under the Special Scheme for Self-Employed Workers it is €1,058.50. In the Coal Mining sector, the average pension is €2,998.30, and €1,734.20 in the Maritime Scheme.

The monthly amount for new retirement registrations in the system averaged €1,653.60, according to the latest available data, which is from March. As for the average widow’s pension, in April it reached €973.90 per month.

Furthermore, in April, 1,463,374 pensions included the supplement to reduce the gender gap, 75% of which were held by women (1,097,463). The average monthly amount of this pension supplement is €76.92. This supplement, in force since February 2021, consists of a fixed amount of €36.90 per month per child, following the revaluation applied in 2026. The application must be made at the time the pension is claimed.
