Why Trump’s Challenges To Democracy Will Be A Big Problem For Biden

The attack on the Capitol may have threatened the lives of federal legislators and Capitol police officers, but the most it achieved was to interrupt, briefly, a ministerial procedure. But the question of real, lasting – and legal – accountability will fall to Biden, and his nominee for attorney general, Merrick Garland. They will decide whether to continue existing investigations and potentially start new ones.

RCEP summit

China | What is the implication of RCEP to Chinese and regional economy?

Jinyue Dong, BBVA Research ! On November 15th, Asia Pacific nations including China, Japan, South Korea, Australia and New Zealand plus 10 countries of ASEAN signed the world’s largest regional free-trade agreement which is the so-called Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership or RCEP, with the member countries encompassing 2.2 billion people that is nearly a third of the world’s population and USD 26.2 trillion GDP as around 1/3 of the world GDP as well as 1/3 of world’s total trade volume. Top officials from 15 nations inked the RCEP nearly a decade in the making on the final day of the 37th ASEAN Summit hosted virtually by Vietnam this year. The completion of negotiations is a strong message affirming China, Eastern Asia and ASEAN’s role in supporting the multilateral trade system. In addition, the agreement will contribute to developing supply chains that have been disrupted due to the Covid-19 pandemic and the China-US decoupling, as well as supporting the regional and world economic recovery. Obviously, the signing of RCEP which has experienced eight years of negotiations among member countries has essential implications on Chinese and regional economy…

G20 leaders, don’t buy the spin: Saudi Arabia’s real changemakers are in jail

Amnesty International | G20 leaders attending this weekend’s virtual summit hosted by Saudi Arabia must take the Saudi authorities to task for their shameless hypocrisy on women’s rights, Amnesty International said today. Women’s empowerment features prominently on Saudi Arabia’s G20 Agenda, despite the fact the activists who spearheaded campaigns for women’s rights are languishing in jail or facing trial.

Brazil–Less Significant Economic Contraction Than Originally Expected

The impact of the coronavirus pandemic has put an end to the modest economic rebound since 2017. The recovery followed Brazil’s longest and deepest recession in 2014-2016, when GDP shrank by almost 9%. However, Brazil’s less stringent containment measures and stronger fiscal support have led to smaller output losses compared to most other countries in the region. In 2020 GDP is expected to contract by 4.6% (an upward revision from the 6.2% contraction expected in August). Business confidence has rebounded since June.

Biden Wins – Experts On What It Means For Race Relations, US Foreign Policy And The Supreme Court

The Conversation | The American public has had its say and for the first time in a generation denied a sitting president a second term. President’s Trump’s tenure lasted just four years, but in that time he dragged policy on an array of key issues in a dramatic new direction. Joe Biden’s victory presents an opportunity to reset the White House agenda and put it on a different course. Three scholars discuss what a Biden presidency may have in store in three key areas: race, the Supreme Court and foreign policy.

What Biden’s Victory Means for the World

Joe Biden, who was declared the winner in America’s presidential election on Saturday, would return the United States to the Paris climate agreement and the World Health Organization; rejoin the Iran nuclear deal if Iran complies with its terms; extend the New START nuclear arms reduction treaty with Russia; and end America’s support for the Saudi-led war in Yemen.

Biden Overtakes Trump In Georgia and Pennsylvania; Within Touching Distance Of The Presidency

Democrat candidate Joe Biden has overtaken President Donald Trump in the race for the state of Georgia, one of six still to be decided since Tuesday’s U.S. elections. According to the main media outlets, the former vice president’s lead over Trump is now just 917 votes, with 99 percent of the count completed. As it stands, Biden would have gathered 49.39 percent of the vote and the Republican candidate 49.37 percent. Currently, the Democrat candidate has 253 votes.

Education And Inequality In The US: A Democrat Victory Will Heat Up The Debate

Pablo Pardo | The total amount of tthe student debt in the US is over $1 Tr ( €850 Bn ).But since the beginning of the pandemic, the US has spent more than $2.2 Tr (almost 1.9 Bn euros) to avoid the economy crashing. For the Republican Party, these liabilities are not a problem in which the State should intervene. Furthermore, the cultural gap goes hand in hand with the economic disparity in the US and the pandemic has exacerbated these divisions. The gap between Republicans and Democrats and, at the same time, between Democrats, over the question of student debt illustrates how the debate on economic policy can be in 2021.

What the US Election Means for the Liberal World Order

Vittorio Emanuele Parsi & Valerio Alfonso Bruno | In 1992, Francis Fukuyama published his controversial best-seller, “The End of History and the Last Man,” arguing that liberal democracy is the final form of government for all nations. Almost three decades later, G. John Ikenberry, one of the most influential theorists of liberal internationalism today, in “A World Safe for Democracy” suggests that the liberal world order, if reformed and reimagined, remains possibly the best “international space” for democracies to flourish and prosper. After all, reasons Ikenberry, what do its illiberal challengers like China or Russia have to offer?

History Will Tell If The Coronavirus Is To Trump What Hurricane Katrina Was To George W. Bush’s Legacy

Regina Borromeo (Robeco ) | Since the summer, our view has been that voting momentum will follow the path of the pandemic and the economic recovery. Trump’s handling of the coronavirus pandemic has been compared to George W. Bush’s mishandling of the disaster response to Hurricane Katrina, which coincided with a fall in the President’s polling and approval ratings. National polls have seen Biden extend his lead to over 10% recently, a larger spread compared to 2016 when Hilary Clinton ran against Trump.
